Looking For Old Victoria
County is inspired by Thomas McIllwraith's Looking For Old Ontario,
an impressionistic interpretation of Old Ontario's landscapes, from barns and
fences to roadsides and cemeteries. While making no claim to be the equal of
McIllwraith's lovely book, Looking For Old Victoria County deals with
somewhat similar topics, most of them falling under the rubric of social
history, until now somewhat neglected by local historians.
Almost twenty writers have
contributed pieces that provide glimpses of the past of this area a couple of
hours north east of Toronto. There are articles about early Lindsay in fact and
fiction, and one on the subject of Lindsay's venerable Academy Theatre, which
will be celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2018. The founding of the Victoria
County Historical Society, at least its second iteration, is the subject of one
article. There's a nostalgic memory piece about an old stone house of Dalton
Township; and articles on Longford Township, archaeology, and The Great Fire of
1861. Some of the articles are on the subject of curiosities such as the
Woodville shoe. One article deals with W.A. Goodwin, local artist of note.
There's a marvellous collection of stamps and cancellation marks of old post
offices of Victoria County. There's lots more, including a lovely piece by Mike
Hensley, an American with Canadian roots. Mike's article will make us proud to
be Canadian, especially in this 150th year of our Confederation.
In conclusion, let us hope that
this book, in celebrating local history, will also serve as a celebration of
our country's sesquicentennial.
Looking For Old Victoria County:
"A dazzling book, lavishly
illustrated, on the subject of the county where some of my 19th century
ancestors, the McCrimmons, established roots. This book I will savour ever so
slowly, with great pleasure." Ian Morrison, Friends of Canadian
"Thank you so much for the
inscribed copy of Looking For Old Victoria County. I am reading it with the
greatest interest and pleasure! The volume is a welcome and useful reminder and
record of many of the interesting and significant sites, buildings, persons and
events who/which have played a part in the lengthy story of Victoria County."
